Hypnosis is a state of focused attention in which your awareness becomes so absorbed that the outside world naturally fades into the background. In this sense, hypnosis, often also called a trance state, is not something strange or unnatural. You have likely experienced similar states many times before: while daydreaming, becoming fully immersed in a film, or losing track of time during a meaningful conversation.
Hypnosis itself is not new. It has been explored and used by practitioners for well over a century and gained wider attention through early psychotherapists such as Sigmund Freud, who emphasised the importance of the subconscious mind. He suggested that beneath our conscious awareness lie deeply rooted emotions, memories, learned coping strategies, and unprocessed experiences. These hidden layers can influence how we behave, how we relate to others, what triggers us emotionally, and how we show up in everyday life.
Of course, this is only one perspective within psychology. There is no single approach that fits everyone. What matters most is finding a method that resonates with you. Hypnosis often appeals to people who sense that something inside them is holding them back, even if they cannot fully explain it in words. Very often, these patterns originate early in life and continue to shape thoughts, emotions, and relationships long into adulthood.
During hypnosis, your body and mind are guided into a deeply relaxed yet alert state. In this state, mental noise quiets down, allowing access to inner processes that are usually obscured by everyday thinking. You remain aware and in control at all times, while becoming more receptive to insight, emotional regulation, and change.
The potential of hypnosis is truly remarkable. Academic research and medical documentation show that some people have undergone medical procedures without chemical anaesthesia, experiencing little to no pain simply by being in a deep hypnotic state. In simple terms, through focused attention and deep relaxation, the brain can dial pain signals down so strongly that the body remains calm and comfortable during procedures that would normally require strong medication. For many people, this realisation alone is inspiring, it shows just how powerful the mind–body connection can be.
Beyond pain management, hypnosis has helped many people create meaningful changes in everyday life. Clients often report quitting smoking after years of failed attempts, stopping compulsive habits such as nail‑biting or emotional eating, overcoming persistent fears or anxiety, and feeling calmer and more confident in relationships and dating. Others describe finally letting go of old emotional wounds, breaking self‑sabotaging patterns, or learning to respond rather than react in challenging situations.
